If you’re a book geek and library lover, you’deb be in heaven in an orchestra’ersus library. It’s scores with the score (and parts as well), on shelf after corner.

The accumulated musical views of the centuries are simultaneously inspiring and sobering. They also have a good alluring aroma all their individual. It’s as good as (but a lttle bit different from) what you breathe in when you prowl the stacks of your good, well established public library.

Somebody has to take care of all that wisdom. Go to the website of the orchestra, large or small, and check out their list of musicians. Somewhere in there, on the list of violists and horn players, you’ll look for a category for librarians.

Orchestra librarians would be the folks who look after all these semibreves, crochets, and also quavers (whole notes, quarter notes, and eighth notes).

But their job isn’t just handing parts out before rehearsals start off, and collecting them following your concert. Orchestra librarians have crucial behind-the-scenes tasks before rehearsal can even begin. Here’utes one example from the San Diego Concert – complete with “bad attitude.”
